Trumpism's most telling and defining occasions – not its most significant, nor most harsh, nor most threatening, nor most senseless, but possibly its most revealing – occurred earlier this fall. Over the span of a few weeks, the nation's leader began displaying the public his designs for a lavish reception room two times larger of the White House and then commenced unilaterally ripping down the East Wing portion to construct it.
He has done things countless times more severe – the current estimate of fatalities due to his slashing to USAID is 600,000 and increasing, and recently an analysis forecast his energy policies would cause deaths another 1.3 million. Yet nothing as characteristic. No former leader would have dared – truly, no other president would have imagined – unilaterally destroying major areas of the presidential residence to construct a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the enthusiastic participation of some of America's wealthiest, the majority of whom maintain dealings with the government.
We moved from 'the gentle will obtain the world' to 'the gentle will succumb to cholera'
As confusing as it is to witness the president try to upend the old idea of democracy and substitute it with its direct contrary, there is one large group of Americans who should not find it totally unfamiliar. That encompasses people such as ourselves – in older age cohorts close to half – who were brought up as conventional Protestant believers.
We have witnessed over the years as rightwing evangelical churches transformed the Christ we learned about into the complete reverse of who we understood him to be. Essentially, they turned a figure of love into a symbol of animosity who approves exactly the harshness that he criticized in biblical teachings; this has happened more slowly, over decades as opposed to months, but it is nonetheless unsettling via comparable methods, a disorienting gut punch for many of us.
A Damaging Christianity Establishes Itself
So let me first describe the Christ from my upbringing, since in theory the Savior is the core of Christian religion, and since the rapidly expanding group of Americans may possess limited understanding of him as they consider themselves non-believers or doubters or spiritual independents. I have no problem with any of these traditions, nor with different religions; however I believe that contain precious wisdom of great price in the Christian story.
It is decidedly absolutely not the story of an authoritative monarch arising; conversely, a child comes into the world to displaced parents in an automotive shelter, who need to rapidly escape to another nation to avoid undercover officers. The infant develops in modest conditions, an employed craftsman; his teaching focuses on affection for other people, specifically for the disadvantaged – and not a sentimental love, but a concrete one, demonstrated through nourishing and protecting. Jesus' answer to violence is to present the additional cheek – not as a gesture of compliant endurance, but as a means to teach the assailant; his method regarding offenses states that when a person pilfers your coat you should give them your pullover too.
The obvious and straightforward reality that Christ from scripture advocates for a type of radical love focused on the poor has perpetually caused the Christian faith rather a provocative belief system: appealing to the masses, but because of its natural unconventionality needing to be restrained. In the 1950s it was controlled through watering down – Protestant Christianity was so prevalent that it practically sanctified existing conditions.
A Struggle for the Finest of Us
So I have been heartened to observe the steadfast resistance regarding Trump arise during the previous year. It has been great solace to assist in constructing the campaign that has protested openly via continuous gatherings, and seems to have inspired voters to show up in numbers in interim political contests. We will need to persist with it, and through comparable resolve, with American flags throughout each rally and appeals to the highest qualities of American history.
We're going to be asked ... about how you treated the immigrant? Did you receive him and receive them or not?
America is best defended, to put it differently, through connection to the highest about American history, similar to Christianity is optimally secured by relationship to that which renders it unique and wonderful, which is the example of the Savior. In neither case does it mean acting as if the most damaging regarding America and Christian faith never occurred; it means both meekness and conviction, a mixture that committed US believers should be comfortable with.
