Right-leaning reactions to the partial disclosure of documents related to the Jeffrey Epstein case have been sharply divided, with certain backers of the previous administration pointing out the prominent appearance of Bill Clinton and additional Democrats in photographs, while others lamented how heavy censorship cast Donald Trump and GOP members in a negative manner.
Justice Department Defends Censorship with Fervent Rhetoric
Administration officials justified the heavily censored sections with intense hyperbole. “Never in U.S. the nation's history has a President or the Justice Department been this transparent with the public about such a delicate law enforcement matter,” stated Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who released a six-page memo describing the redaction procedure.
Questions Raised by Redactions
While Trump's identity and likeness appear in portions of the materials, the widespread black blocks raise serious questions about what may be concealed beneath them. Some conservative lawmakers swiftly demanded greater openness.
“People are furious and disengaging,” wrote Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a social media post, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie asserted the redactions violate the law, and implied that a future legislature may attempt to remove the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Regrettably, today’s document release egregiously fails to comply with both the spirit and the letter of the law,” he continued.
Some Conservative Commentators Swing Behind the Disclosure
But, some rightwing pundits and Trump allies came out strongly in support of the administration.
The release—from a justice department led by key Trump associate Pam Bondi—contains scores of pages that are completely redacted, and numerous of the men depicted in pictures have their faces blacked out.
But a few are not, featuring prominent figures like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The presence of the former president, especially, allowed certain conservative figures to launch the attack.
“It’s quite rich how the political left falsely accused Donald Trump of being a pedophile, only for the Trump DOJ to unveil Epstein files that show Bill Clinton swimming nude with a pedophile,” stated right-wing activist Laura Loomer.
“Recently released documents show Bill Clinton shirtless in a hot tub with a woman that is other than his spouse Hillary Clinton,” posted attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only 1 explanation Epstein would photograph a US President with a girl in a hot tub: Leverage.”
Former President Campaign Releases Response
Bill Clinton has repeatedly said he was aware of no illegal activity by Epstein and has never been accused to have engaged in any misconduct. “The White House hasn’t been concealing those documents for months only to release them late on a weekend to shield Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s spokesperson Angel Ureña stated in a comment.
“This is about protecting officials from what comes next, or from what they’ll try and hide permanently. Therefore they can release as many grainy decades-old photographs as they want, but it is not about Bill Clinton. Not previously, not ever be,” the statement concluded.
Broader Rightwing Comment Remains Subdued
Nonetheless, broader comment on the right was relatively muted following the disclosure, especially when juxtaposed against the vociferous calls for transparency that came before the congressional vote to pass a law requiring the files' publication.
The commentator, who not long ago secured media access at the Defense Department, had been among the loudest proponents for a complete release. Earlier this year, she chastised the Justice Department broadly and Bondi specifically after a set of rightwing personalities were given hard-copy folders of files that included little new data.
