EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US on five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the decision.

The bans were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming a facet of a much broader existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.

In other legal developments:

  • Authorization was issued for the dispatch of 350 national guard members to a major US city prior to the holiday period, coinciding with an active immigration enforcement operation.
  • A Pacific Island nation will consent to take in dozens of migrants from the US in exchange for increased assistance, after concluding a memorandum of understanding with US authorities.

Furthermore, a Democratic lawmaker has initiated legal action to demand the stripping of a political figure’s name from a well-known cultural institution in the capital.

Experts have also noted that comments regarding Venezuelan oil align with a wider ideology in certain circles of “economic expansionism”, drawing comparisons with past foreign policy strategies.
