The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a concrete flight risk while under house arrest.

The one-time leader was convicted of planning a government overthrow in last fall and given more than a 27-year term in incarceration, but he was staying under house arrest pending legal challenges.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a preventative measure after recent developments were revealed.

This involved attempting to break his electronic bracelet and a invitation to a public vigil that could "allow for a possible escape.

Court Filing Details Flight Fears

In a filing authorising the detention, the magistrate said information from the facility tracking the former president's confinement suggested the one-time head of state's aim to disable the electronic ankle bracelet to guarantee victory in his flight.

This, it said, would be assisted by the confusion caused by the gathering called by his son.

His son, his son Flávio, who serves as a congressional representative, called for a meeting of his backers near the former president's residence to take place on the weekend.

The senator wrote on digital networks on last Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your nation, or watch it all from your phone there on your settee? I urge you to struggle with us."

He said the demonstration would be so followers could offer prayers for his physical condition and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our land."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears

Part of the magistrate's ruling was the possibility of the former president's transfer to embassies near the residence, considering that the investigations revealed a history of arranging to ask for protection through a consular facility", a declaration said.

The legal document highlights that the US embassy in the capital, Brazil's capital, is positioned around approximately 13 kilometers from the former president's residence.

Global Responses

The former president's legal troubles have generated frustration from fellow populist conservative US President Donald Trump, leading him to enact a half-rate duty on Brazilian product imports.

The former president is being kept in a Federal Police station in the capital and will have a detention review on the following day.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on last Friday that the his legal team asked the Supreme Court to permit him to complete his entire prison term under home confinement, with digital surveillance.

They also petitioned that Bolsonaro be authorized to leave his home for healthcare, saying he demanded ongoing care for lung conditions and other ailments.

Background on Conviction

He was determined responsible of leading a plot aimed at retaining his authority after he failed to win the national vote to his left-wing rival, Lula.

High Court judges said that he had knowledge of a plot which encompassed plans to murder Lula and his running partner, Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Alexandre de Moraes - the High Court judge who has been managing his judicial proceedings.

The plot was prevented because it couldn't obtain the backing of the army and air force commanders. His successor was sworn in without incident on 1 January 2023.

But a following week, on January 8th, numerous his followers invaded and destroyed official structures in the national capital, Brazil's capital.

The law enforcement took action and around 1,500 people were detained.

The judges found that the rioters had been provoked by him whose plan, they said, was for the Brazilian military to step in, reestablish control and bring him back to power.

At the period, his attorneys called the over 27-year sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also banned from seeking elected position until the year 2060 - a decade minus two years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The ex-leader called the legal proceedings a political persecution and said it was intended to stop him participating in the next presidential race.
